Trail Runners vs. Hiking Boots

So, what’s the difference between trail runners and hiking boots?

Trail runners are for those taking to the trails at fast speeds. Hiking boots? They are for slower-paced trekkers on potentially more difficult terrain.

But, what if you plan to do both? Or how about previous foot injuries? Taking these questions into consideration, let us guide you on which route to choose.

According to the American Hiking Society, there are four types of footwear—all thankfully all fall under the umbrella of either “boot” or “shoe” (because hiking in heels, booties, slippers, clogs, etc. would just be absurd).

  • Trail runners – Similar to a sneaker specifically for trail running or light hikes.
  • Trail shoes – Also sneaker-like with better tread for moderate hiking.
  • Light hiking boots – Higher cut (hence the boot part) for a variety of conditions, especially in cold and/or snow.
  • Heavy hiking boots – Usually an all-leather boot for backpacking and/or climbing with a pack weighing in at over 40 pounds.

For those looking to do both walking and running should go with a trail shoes or light hiking boots depending on terrain.

If you have suffered ankle damage or injuries, choose a boot with as much ankle support as possible. It will help alleviate the pressure your ankles can endure. However, as the American Hiking Association mentions, having a shoe that fits properly can trump a higher ankle any day of the week.

  1. Hi Brenda, Is this the brand you are talking about? http://www.bornshoes.com/Category.aspx?GenderID=8&CatID=102&PageNo=1&SortType=P

Unfortunately we do not sell that brand on http://hikingboots.com yet, but I can suggest a light hiking boot from The North Face http://hikingboots.com/the-north-face, Hi-Tec http://hikingboots.com/hi-tec and Salomon http://hikingboots.com/salomon. Feel free to call our customer service department with more specific questions. They are super helpful and can be reached toll-free at 1-877-680-0058.
